My favorite “Growing Up in the Hood” movies

Yeah, I am a white female born to a middle class family and grew up in a nice Southern California neighborhood. That doesn’t mean I can’t have an appreciation for movies about growing up in the “hood”. On the contrary, I enjoy a number of them and like other movie tropes there are some that are great and some that could use a little tweaking.  All in all they are very entertaining and somewhat addictive. Let’s take a look at some of my favorites.

Boyz n the Hood (1991)- This is John Singleton’s only good film. Everything after this is crap. This is also the film that introduced us to Cuba Gooding Jr. and has Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishbourne playing his parents (even though the both of them are less than 10 years older than him). Plus, it also gave us that awesome NWA song.
