DANIEL JOHNSTON:An American singer, songwriter, musician, and artist.

The aspiring cartoonist — whose playful, symbol-heavy sketches have graced the covers of may of his releases, including “Fun” — moved to Texas in 1983. First he went to Houston, living with his brother and working at Astro World, while also recording the seminal tapes “Yip/Jump Music” and “Hi, How Are You?” on a $59.00 Sanyo mono boom box. These recordings featured such classics as “Speeding Motorcycle,” “Sorry Entertainer,” and odes to everyone from “Casper the Friendly Ghost” and “King Kong” to “The Beatles.” From there he moved to San Marcos, TX, and even joined a traveling carnival show for a spell, selling corndogs. “It was like a movie all the time. Everybody around me was a great story that never stopped, and for the first time, I realized how much freedom you have to do what you want.”Throughout his career, Daniel’s songs and drawings have been informed to some degree by his ongoing struggle with manic depression — lending an added poignancy to his soul-searching times. His five-month stint with the carney left him in Austin, where he decided to stay. In the midst of that city’s mid-eighties music scene, Johnston was a definite iconoclast. While he continued to hand out his tapes for free, Austin record stores started selling them; in fact, the became best-selling local releases. Soon, a camera crew from MTV’s seminal “Cutting Edge” show came to town and all the Austin bands suggested they feature Daniel. Daniel Johnston is my favorite singer, songwriter, musician and artist.

Even though things have probably not calmed down yet in light of CW/WB’s announcement that ‘Glee’ star Grant Gustin had been cast as the Flash, there’s still more news where that came from.

And on that note, The CW recently released its first peek at a DC villain that Micheal Jai White (Spawn, The Dark Knight) will be playing called Bronze Tiger (this news also keeps in light of the upcoming “Year One” special that will bring Arrow fans up to speed on the upcoming season. The special will be airing on October 2, 2013).

In this sneak peek (provided to the general populous by none other than TVGuide), we see White sporting some oh-so-familiar claws as he fights and gets his hands dirty.

VEXTA: Female Graffiti Artist

Sydney-born, New York residing artist Vexta is known for her intricate paintings and large scale street works which combine a fluid use of stencils and expressive hand painted elements. From the mid 2000s, Vexta’s street art began spreading across her dual home cities of Melbourne & Sydney before going on to spread across the globe. Since her early days of running around back laneways with a spray can, her work has developed into a dedicated studio practice creating paintings, assemblage sculptures and installations. Her psychedelic, neon-drenched images draw from a broad spectrum of cultural and visual debris and are heavily imbued with personal symbolism at the same time referring to a greater urban mythology. Suspended in time and space, the characters in Vexta’s work connect the dots between the personal and the universal; our waking lives and the dreams beneath them. A marriage of hard-edged cultural commentary and aching beauty.

Willie Rage tells a story to only change the world of hip hop, with his lyrics to eliminate the stereotype that gangster rap only comes from the west coast.
